Windows 10 end of life occurred on October 14th, 2025, when Microsoft stopped providing support. However, just because the company stopped offering support for Windows 10 doesn’t mean everyone switched to the newer Windows 11. In fact, many of us are still proud users of the older software.
However, that decision to keep using Windows 10 does come with some complications. For example, Microsoft 365 is losing new features on Windows 10. Those using Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 will see feature updates for apps such as Word and Excel reaching their cutoff at Version 2608.
While this may sound concerning, please note that your Office applications will continue to function. You do need to understand the difference between losing new features and losing security updates though. With this in mind, our team at My Computer Works is sharing what you need to know.
Once Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft 365 apps reach Version 2608, they will stop receiving new features. This is the extent of the change. This means that Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 won’t move past this version, and users who keep using Windows 10 won’t get access to new features in later releases.
Unfortunately, this means feature Office updates on Windows 10 will also eventually stop bringing in new tools and capabilities. So, you could miss future additions to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, such as new editing tools, data-analysis features, presentation capabilities, and other improvements Microsoft adds in later releases.
Many users may be disappointed to learn that Copilot is included in this version cutoff. Although eligible Copilot features will continue through version 2608, newer Copilot additions released afterward may not be available to Windows 10 users.
Reaching the Version 2608 cutoff does not disable Microsoft Office on Windows 10. You will still have full access to your applications. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the files you’ve already created don’t simply disappear because new feature updates have stopped.
You’ll likely find that you can still use Microsoft Office on Windows 10 to complete the tasks you have to do. For instance, even after you reach Version 2608, you can still open and edit documents, create presentations, work with spreadsheets, and use the features that are already part of your Microsoft 365 apps. So there is no need to worry that Word on Windows 10 will stop letting you write or edit your documents and Excel on Windows 10 will suddenly lock sheets or disable formulas.
But what you should bear in mind is that there will be new Office features not supported on Windows 10 desktop apps as Microsoft releases later versions. If those newer features become important to you, that may give you another reason to consider upgrading.
Although there will be no feature updates, Microsoft 365 security updates are still guaranteed until October 10th, 2028. So even after the Version 2608 feature cutoff, you can expect those security fixes to continue through Microsoft’s normal update channels.
This is a good thing because it will give you enough time to plan a move to Windows 11, and you won’t feel pressured to replace or upgrade your PC immediately. However, don’t take too long to decide, as Microsoft Windows 10 support is incredibly limited after it passes its normal end of support.
OneDrive is a part of the Microsoft ecosystem, but it has its own timeline. Based on the company’s reports, the OneDrive desktop app on Windows 10 22H2 is expected to continue receiving updates through October 10th, 2028.
However, the caveat is ‘22H2 ’, as Microsoft has already ended OneDrive desktop app support for Windows 10 21H2 and earlier in August 2026. So, if you have the version ‘21H2’ or earlier, you’re no longer going to receive OneDrive updates.
At My Computer Works, we provide clear, objective guidance regarding your software. You don’t need to upgrade to Windows 11 right away if the only reason you’re upgrading is Microsoft 365 and its new features.
We say this because if your existing Office setup already does everything you need, losing future features may have little immediate impact on your life. In fact, a person who simply checks their emails, writes documents, or works with ordinary spreadsheets might not even notice the feature cutoff initially.
The primary concern remains the Windows 10 end of support itself. As Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 falls further behind, moving to a supported operating system becomes increasingly sensible. So, if your computer can make the move, our Windows 11 support techs can also help make that transition less frustrating.
Now you know when Microsoft 365 is stopping Windows 10 access to new features and what you may miss out on if you don’t upgrade. You also know that you have enough time (but not too much) to decide if it makes sense to upgrade to Windows 11 now or in the future.
With this in mind, if you’re unsure whether your PC can run Windows 11 or what these support deadlines mean for the programs you rely on, My Computer Works can help you work through your options. Simply contact our team today and let us help.
