Check website’s security settings

This is so important. If the site is not secure, leave and never come back! To make sure you’re visiting a website with good security settings, the URL (web address) will start with “https://” and there will be a lock icon.

Too-Good-To-Be-True

There are deals out there that are just too-good-to-be-true. We are all guilty of ignoring the fine print when it comes to shopping online. You may not see it, but here can be hidden fees, longer term payments, or even a disclaimer that the item is different then what it is pictured to be. Around holidays like Valentine’s Day you WILL see a lot of amazing priced deals for hard-to-find items, so take time to investigate.

Phishing

We are all aware of spam loaded emails and how some of them can actually be enticing. Unless you are familiar with the company and its legitimacy, do not click on any of the links provided in the email. Some hackers pose as delivery companies and send out emails with “tracking information” links. If you click on these it could put you at risk for identity theft or malware being placed on your computer.

If this has happened to you, call My Computer Works right away! We can remotely link up to your computer and remove all viruses and malware. 877-629-6972

Use a credit card

It is always better to be safe than sorry, and by using a credit card you are further protecting yourself from scammers. How? It is much easier to dispute fraudulent charges on a credit card as opposed to a prepaid cards like a debit or gift card. These prepaid cars just don’t have the same protection as a credit card.

Keep your computer clean

Install a firewall, anti-spyware, anti-virus software on any and all computers you use to browse the web. Be sure to run virus scans regularly on all of your digital devices. Thankfully, My Computer Works specializes in keeping your technology protected! We can install software to prevent scammers from hacking into your electronics.
